Since then, our lives have been turned upside-down and business-as-usual doesn\u2019t apply anymore.<\/p>\n<p>The question is: What can we do as business leaders to prepare our businesses best for the future?<\/p>\n<p>We have come to take for granted some of the benefits of global trade \u2013 a vast selection of products manufactured in all corners of the globe, seasonal fruits and vegetables available out of season, and a constant stream of new technology that promises to make our lives easier and more enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not a member? Sign up via this<\/strong> <strong>LINK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the Covid-19 pandemic, aggravated by the U.S.-China trade war,\u00a0has exposed how complex and interconnected global production systems\u00a0are, and how the demand for notebook computers can affect the supply of car parts, or how e-commerce demand in the U.S. can affect the\u00a0grain exports\u00a0from American farmers\u00a0and exports\u00a0more broadly.<\/p>\n<p>Like a\u00a0tide\u00a0that suddenly recedes from a shoreline exposing\u00a0a rocky shallow, the global pandemic has exposed\u00a0many\u00a0vulnerabilities in\u00a0global\u00a0supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>What are some of the lessons that we have learned, and how\u00a0can\u00a0a renewed focus on\u00a0supply\u00a0diversification and managing those\u00a0vulnerabilities\u00a0help businesses to become more resilient in the future?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9411\" src=\"https:\/\/egn.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/01\/Willy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/egn.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/01\/Willy.png 200w, https:\/\/egn.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/01\/Willy-21x24.png 21w, https:\/\/egn.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/01\/Willy-31x36.png 31w, https:\/\/egn.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/01\/Willy-42x48.png 42w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Willy Shih<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Willy Shih is the Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Management Practice in Business Administration at the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts.\u00a0 He is part of the Technology and Operations Management Unit, and he teaches in the MBA and Executive Education Programs.<\/p>\n<p>Willy\u2019s expertise is in manufacturing, supply chains, and product development. He has written or co-authored numerous cases and teaching materials in a wide range of industries.\u00a0 His 2009 Harvard Business Review paper, \u201cRestoring American Competitiveness,\u201d co-authored with Gary Pisano, called attention to the link between manufacturing and innovation and the perils of off-shoring.\u00a0 His paper on the challenges of reshoring was featured in the Fall 2014 issue of the Sloan Management Review, and his paper \u201cIs it Time to Rethink Globalized Supply Chains?\u201d in the Sloan Management Review was the magazine\u2019s most popular article of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to coming to HBS in 2007, Willy spent 28 years in industry.
